Olympic Gold medal gymnast Carly Patterson and Comedian Lil’ JJ of Nickelodeon also are scheduled to attend the 45-minute event at the Coliseum,
The Education Awareness Tour, named after the legendary Fort Worth school teacher, is sending a simple message to teachers in North Texas – and across the state: “We Appreciate You.” Through a series of events over the next six months, the tour is raising money to help send students from low-income families to college.
Over the past several weeks, Patterson and Lil’ JJ have been traveling the state, each sharing stories of their educational experiences. They’ve also promoted the ‘Ultimate T-shirt Challenge’, a program that encourages students, teachers and administrators to sell the shirts that are designed with inspirational slogans. Top sellers around the state are eligible to win cash prizes, trips and a new car.
With recent news about the state’s most troubled schools, tour organizers have worked overtime to motivate teachers and students about the importance of education. They’re also trying to create more positive images in the media.
Wednesday night’s rally is sponsored by Lone Star Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Dallas, which is donating the car; Frost Bank, and Infinity Insurance Group.
The scholarship fund is named after Hazel Harvey Peace who taught for 49 years and is best known for her advice to students, “Start early and quit late.”
